Deadly storms and tornadoes hit the US states of Michigan and Oklahoma

Four people were killed and twelve injured as a tornado ripped through Union City, Michigan. Now, the neighborhood is coming together to pick up the debris.

Following a series of devastating tornadoes that raced across southwest Michigan on Friday, which resulted in four fatalities and twelve injuries, search and rescue operations are still ongoing around Union Lake west of Union City in Branch County on Saturday.

A 12-year-old child in Michigan passed away from weather-related injuries. When a tornado hit the region, the boy's parents called 911 to report that they couldn't find their son. By the time first responders came, the parents were giving him first aid.

According to the Branch County Sheriff's Office, an apparent tornado struck the Union Lake region near Union City, Michigan, resulting in three fatalities and twelve injuries. A tornado struck around 50 miles southwest, causing multiple injuries and one fatality, according to Cass County officials.

A tornado near Union Lake had an EF-3 classification, with speeds believed to have reached at least 150 mph. A tornado's rating is determined by its estimated wind speed and associated damage using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, or EF scale.

Tyler Cramer arrived at Menards, a home improvement business in Three Rivers, Michigan, as tornado sirens went off. According to Cramer, he and his coworkers fled for the store's shelter area as the clouds cleared and the wind increased.

The skylights begin to burst out as we run. Cramer told NBC News, "You can watch all the doors come off the building." "If you look down the aisles, we saw the garden center on the far side of the store practically vanish."

Cramer, other staff members, and patrons witnessed entire sections of the store fall from the refuge location. According to Cramer, the entire tornado's destructive wave seemed to last for just thirty seconds. He remarked, "It hit so quickly and was gone."

Three Rivers' powerlines were destroyed by the tornado, which also damaged cars and launched large chunks of debris into trees. Two persons at a residence near Beggs, Oklahoma, just south of Tulsa, died as a result of a tornado, according to the Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office.

From Oklahoma to Iowa to Michigan, tornado watches and warnings were issued as a result of the storms that struck a large portion of the country's middle. On Friday, there were fifteen preliminary tornado reports from Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, at least one tornado was confirmed on Friday in southern Michigan, close to Union City, and there were reports of potential further tornadoes.

At a press conference, Branch County, Michigan, officials stated that they intend to finish continuing recovery efforts tonight. According to Branch County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Miner, the county used a variety of recovery tools, such as cadaver search and drones.

Widespread damage and power outages in southwest Michigan

Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties were devastated by the storms, which destroyed trees, flattened houses, and left many without power. About 5,500 outages were reported by Indiana Michigan Power, and an additional 1,300 customers were impacted by Midwest Energy and Communications.

The storms damaged Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties, flattening homes, destroying trees, and leaving many without electricity. Midwest Energy and Communications reported 1,300 customers affected, while Indiana Michigan Power reported about 5,500 outages.

According to David Roth, a meteorologist at the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, the combination of a weather system that drew moisture from the Gulf and a warm front that moved north created the ideal circumstances for a tornado in a state where they are comparatively uncommon. The Great Lakes region's air was significantly colder for the system.

According to him, Michigan experiences 15 tornadoes annually on average, far fewer than Texas's 155 and Kansas's 96.

Following the extreme weather, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said on X that Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties would be placed under a state of emergency. She also stated that the state is organizing support for people impacted.

A weather system that pulled moisture from the Gulf and a warm front that moved north created the perfect conditions for a tornado in a state where they are relatively rare, according to David Roth, a meteorologist at the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. For the system, the air in the Great Lakes region was much cooler.

He claims that Michigan has an average of 15 tornadoes per year, which is far less than Texas's 155 and Kansas's 96.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on X that Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties would declare a state of emergency due to the severe weather. She added that the state is planning assistance for those affected.

By nightfall, the storm system was speeding northeast at almost forty miles per hour, causing alerts in Metro Detroit and tornado warnings in mid-Michigan. Heavy rain and floods persisted into early Saturday morning, prompting the National Weather Service to warn locals to stay vigilant.

As damage assessments started around southern Michigan, crews worked through the night to remove debris and restore utilities. In order to verify the quantity and intensity of tornadoes that made landfall, the NWS will keep surveying the impacted areas.

A first responder drove directly at a storm near the western Oklahoma town of Fairview, where lightning flashes highlighted a massive funnel that seemed to approach the ground, in an unsettling picture that was caught on camera on Thursday. A camera installed in the deputy's vehicle recorded the storm, which was one of the first severe weather outbreaks on the eve of the spring storm season.

At around 10 p.m. on Thursday, a 47-year-old Fairview woman and her 13-year-old daughter were discovered dead in a car close to the intersection of a county road and a highway, according to investigators.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt stated in a statement on Friday, "I am praying for the family as they grieve this tragic loss, as well as all those impacted by the storms."

Due to extreme weather, tornadoes, and flooding, Stitt issued a state of emergency declaration for eight counties early on Saturday.

According to Kevin Turner, he lives directly across the street from the location where the mother and daughter were discovered. After witnessing bursts of light from lightning and lost power, as well as a blue-green hue in the sky that Turner claimed he recognized as the tornado, Turner and his family sought refuge in their cellar.

They came out to observe the damage after around five minutes. Turner remarked, "I have some downed barns, and as you can see, a lot of debris across there, and I may be missing a couple cows."

Oklahoma communities have united to aid neighbors whose houses were destroyed and to assist cleanup efforts.

While assisting his daughter in cleaning up her house in Bristow, Oklahoma, Daren Dean noticed that the damage at her neighbor's house was even worse. While others "pretty much lost everything," Dean's kid was "fortunate."

The spring storms coincide with the beginning of what many refer to as tornado season, which starts at different times in different regions of the United States. A weather radio and a shelter plan are two basic safety precautions that experts advise taking before a tornado strikes.

Some parts of the Northeast saw an improvement in the weather on Friday, although weather advisories were still in effect for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

By the weekend, the weather pattern is also predicted to bring exceptionally warm temperatures for this time of year in some portions of the southern United States.

In their long-range forecast discussion, federal forecasters stated that "temperatures will be 20–30 degrees above average, with 80s reaching as far north as parts of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic." "Daily records might spread widely."
